It is striking how much knowledge has been gathered by previous generations. Some time ago, I stumbled upon a painting depicting a Dutch East India Company ship anchored off Borneo in 1636. There was no indication of who painted it or where it was exhibited. It was not until about ten years later that I found out about another similar painting, which had appeared on an auction list from London! This painting showed exactly the same ship as depicted in my Borneo picture. That’s when I started looking for more information on these paintings. And then a kind of detective story began.
