The Brederode left Vlieland’s roadstead with 46 other warships on June 9, 1645, to bring a convoy of three hundred Dutch merchantmen safely to the Baltic Sea. Due to the war between Denmark and Sweden, the Baltic Sea trade, which was important to the Republic, was hampered and warships had to ensure free passage.
